Measuring and control systems (MCS) are used to automatically control both manufacturing and non-manufacturing processes, including monitoring, visualisation and evaluation.

Installation of frequency drives on electric motors, such as variable speed drives  (VSD), is a typical industrial MCS measure. They work by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor, which increases or decreases its speed to meet demand, or the volume of work the machine needs to perform. Regulating speed like this can cut energy use by up to 40 % (typically 20 %). Frequency drives can be installed on elevators, ventilation systems, and compressors, to name a few applications.

In the service sector and public administration, it is more typical to see automated systems and building controls applied as part of the overall building management system. Installations include those for controlling and regulating temperature, cooling and ventilation. They can lead to power savings of up to 15 % (typically 8%).
