To address the Coronavirus outbreak and to ramp-up overall production of personal protective equipment, the European Commission has already made available relevant European harmonised standards to interested companies, as well as revised harmonised standards that allow manufacturers to place on the market high performing devices to protect patients, health care professionals and citizens in general.

The European Commission is supporting the Global Hack, an online hackathon, organised by Accelerate Estonia, Garage48, Guaana with the support of Devpost. The Hackathon is designed to share and rapidly develop ideas for the urgently needed solutions in the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The Global Hack aims to partner people from around the world with one another to exchange ideas, know-how and best practices to come up with creative and nimble solutions.

The European Commission has published a Q&A on the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative Plus (CRII+), covering topics like the facilitation of EU-funded investments, measures to alleviate the impact on the most deprived, and the support of the seafood sector, farmers and rural areas. The CRII+ complements the first package of measures of the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative. 

The European Commission has approved requests from Member States and the UK to temporarily waive customs duties and VAT on the import of medical devices, and protective equipment, from third countries in order to help in the fight against coronavirus. This will make it easier financially to get the medical equipment that doctors, nurses and patients desperately need. The Commission has swiftly approved requests received from all Member States. This measure includes masks and protective equipment, as well as testing kits, ventilators and other medical equipment.
