Economising in an energy-intensive sector

  • SPIT's optimised air-conditioning system significantly cut energy costs
  • Saving the planet an equivalent of 89 000 km car journeys

SPIT has 65 years of experience in the construction industry in Europe, specialising in the design, manufacturing and marketing of metal fastening and perforating systems. The company's sites perform high-quality work that often requires intense energy usage. SPIT decided to look into innovative ways to make its factories more environmentally friendly.

An analysis of the air-conditioning in the company's workshops showed that the system was constantly operating regardless of the production schedule or occupancy. SPIT redefined the areas of the workshop by assigning dedicated air-handling units (zones) and installed room thermostats at a cost of around € 5 000. Then it optimised the temperature thresholds according to the working schedule (week/weekend) and occupancy levels in order to optimise ambient temperature and save on energy consumption.

Key results

Thanks to this simple on-site analysis of the air-conditioning systems, SPIT managed to reduce its energy use by 85 000 kWh of gas and 23 000 kWh of electricity. The company estimates that these savings are the environmental equivalent of 89 000 km in car journeys.
