Implementing a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) hosts a desktop operating system through a centralised server. This means no need for individual PCs, as employees access the system and their files via a standard keyboard and monitor. With VDI companies can implement a multi-user IT system at the fraction of the cost of conventional desktop stations.

There are two main approaches to VDI: persistent and non-persistent. Persistent VDI provides each user with his or her own desktop image, much like a traditional personal desktop. Non-persistent VDI provides a pool of uniform desktops that users can access when needed and that revert to their original state each time the user logs out.

These solutions are well suited to small and medium-sized enterprises, especially those companies interested in centralising control over data for security reasons or looking to provide more centralised access to high-end desktop applications. For example, companies providing financial services (e.g. hedge funds, boutique brokerages) or other organisations with extremely confidential and proprietary information benefit from a VDI environment because it keeps data off laptops (which can get lost or stolen).

Result

Apart from reduced clutter and cables in the office, providers of VDI technology say their systems can help SMEs save between 30 % and 50 % on the current cost for IT administration to manage, patch, upgrade and support employees' PCs in a client/server environment. This represents a saving of between € 320 and € 450 per desktop annually, which can go towards offsetting the cost of implementing a VDI.
