Heart and soul of green packaging

  • Packaging specialist worried about large volumes of sludge containing reusable fibres
  • New egg carton design leads to reduced waste and annual savings of € 20 000

Cemosa, located in Atxondo (Bizkaia, the Basque Country) produces moulded cellulose packaging, mainly for eggs and fruit. The company was worried about its 3 000 tonne a year output of de-inking sludge, over half of which was fibre that could be reused. So, it  decided to radically redesign its egg packaging with recycling and ease of use in mind.

With an innovative separation technology, Cemosa was able to return quality fibre (10 % of the total) to the process. It also developed SOUL®, a new packaging system capable of handling six, ten and dozen volumes. SOUL® is recyclable, biodegradable and environmentally-friendly because it is produced with sustainable raw materials such as moulded cellulose.

Key benefits

Returning quality fibre to the process means Cemosa reuses 139 tonnes of paper fibre, saving € 20 000 a year, but also reducing annual waste by 400 tonnes.

As for SOUL®, it saves materials and waste, which significantly reduces costs and the environmental impact of the packaging.
