We continue to make progress in the project in which we have been immersed for some months, the SMART SPORT ANALYTICS TOILET (SSAT) project: Real-time detection of markers in urine.
This collaborative initiative is coordinated by the Associació Catalana Clúster De La Indústria De L'Esport (INDESCAT), with the participation of the Cluster of Innovative Solutions for Independent Living (SIVI), the companies JUNGLE VENTURES SL, ASSOCIACIÓ ESPORTIVA CENTRAL and DYNATECH 2012 SCP.
Together, we have embarked on the innovative development of a solution that offers advanced body parameters that can alert the risk of suffering an injury derived from sports practice, that is extremely simple to use and can make recommendations to minimise the risk.
In this sense, the SMART SPORT ANALYTICS TOILET (SSAT) aims to develop a new value proposition that allows users and professionals to monitor parameters on their state of fatigue, recovery and risk of injury without modifying the daily habit: going to the bathroom.
The aim is to convert traditional toilets in a sports facility into new intelligent monitoring stations with no effort on the part of the user through immediate urine analysis to reduce the risk of injury and better prescribe exercise.

A glimpse into the heart of SSAT:
At its core, SSAT aims to develop a new cartridge capable of measuring more comprehensive urine parameters such as haematuria, proteinuria or urea for injury prevention, while conferring a key sustainability parameter for the transition to climate neutrality in saving an essential resource such as water.
In fact, SSAT is also born as a consequence of demand from sports practitioners, sports facility management professionals, as well as from the medical and healthcare community. All of them, highlight the need to extend and offer a more extended value proposition on how to integrate different urine parameters in a decentralised, simple and robust way without modifying a person's habit.

In addition, the aim is to aggregate parameters to be applied in environments adjacent to sport and/or sports practice, such as in geriatrics or the health sector in the medium term.

Biosensor Technology Platform:
We will use a proprietary biosensor technology platform patented in late 2022 consisting of optical sensors that have the ability to analyse aspects such as haematuria, proteinuria or urea in urine. These properties of urine are directly associated with markers of possible risks of excessive fatigue and induced injuries due to neuromuscular stress or muscle damage, among others.
In addition, the optical system will also allow to add in the value proposition a system that will optimise toilet flushing according to the amount of urine urinated by the user, saving more than 65% of water in the daily use of the toilet and thus reducing costs for the installation.
In this way, it is intended to implement a unique solution in terms of wellbeing as well as sustainability.
A promising future:
The SSAT project aims to offer an innovative solution to sports and physical activity centres to promote smart and customisable physical activity that is extremely user-friendly, as well as promoting more sustainable facilities.
In the future, it is expected to be scalable to the more than 79,000 physical activity and sports facilities in Spain alone.
In addition, the project is expected to evolve with new cartridges on topics that encompass other analyses (pH, creatinine, ketones, etc.), as well as the intelligent integral management of the facility and nutritional and medical aspects that also affect a large part of the population.
In the medium term, the concept of "smart bathrooms" is expected to grow significantly in various fields, thanks to the participation of world-leading industrial partners in the sector with high scalability, as well as the large number of trends, such as the monitoring of well-being or the rise of smart buildings with growth of more than 20% per year.
This project has been financed by the AEI (Innovative Business Associations) line of aid from the Ministerio de Industria, Comercio y Turismo of the Spain Government.
