Submitted by Imogen Allan on 07 July 2021

The SME performance review is one of the main tools the European Commission uses to monitor and assess countries' progress in implementing the SME strategy and the Small Business Act (SBA).

The review provides comprehensive information on the performance of SMEs in EU countries and other partner countries.

This year, the review is focussing on the impact of the Covid pandemic on SMEs.

It consists of:

  • an annual report on European SMEs
  • SME country fact sheets

It also provides an overview of the size, structure and importance of SMEs to the European economy and a summary of the past and forecasted performance of SMEs from 2008 to 2021.

In particular, the report looks at:

  • the digitalisation of SMEs
  • SMEs and COVID-19
  • sustainability
