If lighting in a shop or warehouse uses over 12 kW/m2 of power, there is a high likelihood that savings can be made. Firstly, it is important to monitor energy consumption for lighting to find out which elements of the system are consuming the most. Find solutions to rectify the problem, whether it is replacing older fittings, using new technologies, or simply installing more energy efficient bulbs.

A number of organisation-wide measures can make a difference:

  • Use as much natural light as possible.
  • Optimise the use of lights by switching them off when not needed during the day, at certain times at night, during restocking or identified special uses.
  • Eliminate unnecessary lighting energy use outside normal hours. Lighting that is not required can be switched off or dimmed.
  • Do not over-fill or crowd store windows, blocking out light; place key products as close to the window as possible.
  • Lighting should be switched off and sockets unplugged when shops/offices/warehouses are not occupied.
  • Do not leave outdoor lighting on during the day.
  • Use timers and smart technology to help monitor and adjust lighting accordingly.
