Glass-maker seeks transparency ... in environmental performance

  • A focus on EMAS boosted environmental transparency and delivered savings
  • Reduced water consumption by 48 % and energy consumption by 17 % between 2006 and 2009

Verallia, a global player in glass packaging based in Portugal, implemented a series of environmental improvments according to its eco-management and audit system (EMAS). The changes, including water- and energy-saving measures, sought to boost performance during the manufacture and distribution of glass containers.

Key results

The EMAS measures and benefits included reduced water consumption by 48 % and energy consumption by 17 % between 2006 and 2009. Verallia successfully reused 88 % of its recycled wastewater in 2008, and reached 96 % in 2009. The company has also observed greater internal and external transparency regarding overall environmental performance, which has helped it better comply with environmental legislation.
