Impacts:
Energy
Sector:
Accommodation and food service activities Wholesale and retail trade (exc. motor vehicles) Cross-cutting
Investment cost:
Low cost
Cost savings:
During the REBUS trial, it was concluded that energy saving would outweigh the changeover cost at around the halfway point of the 4.5 years project; looking at a case study of swapping a standard 40 W incandescent bulb with a Tala 3 W Squirrel Cage bulb, results show that € 37.55 can be saved each year per bulb, in terms of energy savings and bulb replacement savings
Investment cost:
Although 30 % more expensive than standard bulbs, payment can be spread over a longer period of time, and of course, more energy efficient bulbs work out cheaper in the long term (cost savings refer to an example of replacing a standard 40 W incandescent bulb with a Tala 3 W Squirrel Cage Bulb)
Payback time:
Payback time on the initial spend of € 25 on a 3 W Squirrel Cage Bulb is 9 months
Cost:
Low cost
Resource savings: Energy:
Looking at a case study of swapping a standard 40 W incandescent bulb with a Tala 3 W Squirrel Cage bulb, 161.62 kWh/year were saved

Efficient by design

Tala LED® manufactures and retails energy efficient filaments and light-emitting diode spotlights. With the company’s mantra of ‘conservation through beauty’, the products combine contemporary design with greater energy efficiency. Tala has created an app which allows customers to calculate their energy savings over time and is working to develop a smart internal board that controls and monitors devices in order to help customers reduce energy usage.

Each of the bulbs is expected to last at least 10 years.

Result

The lighting is up to 90 % more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs. The REBUS project is a European-wide initiative, funded by LIFE+ and led by WRAP, which piloted technologies such as Tala’s lighting. As a result, 10 businesses adopted the energy saving lighting. All feedback from the pilot was positive.
