World Economic Forum: Collaboration between Cluster IDiA, Spanish regional government, and Amazon Web Services as best practice for post-COVID era

Submitted by Nina Hoppmann on 30 January 2021

The World Economic Forum highlights the unique agreement on skilling young talents between the Spanish cluster IDiA and Amazon Web Services as a good practice to be followed by public institutions for the economic and social recovery. These skilling activities are financed by the regional employment services of Aragon, INAEM, to make available free digital trainings to unemployed young people in the region and to meet the shortages in skilled professionals in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT). IDiA is already working towards further developing this agreement with regards to the European Skills Agenda.

At the first meeting of the World Economic Forum in Mount Davos, Switzerland, in 2021, the agreement reached by the Spanish cluster IDiA and the regional government of Aragon with Amazon Web Services to provide free training in this technology to young people has been given as an example to be followed in the post-crisis era.

This is reflected in the article “This is how we build a future-ready workforce for the post-COVID world” from the Davos Forum, which recounts an exchange between Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, and Teresa Carlson, Amazon Web Services’ vice-president for the public sector. Both world leaders advocate public-private collaboration in different industries to empower professionals as a way out of the crisis caused by COVID-19. The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the transformation of our economic system towards a rapid digitalisation that demands professionals trained in these technologies. At present, companies are unable to meet the demand and have trouble finding suitable talent trained in information and communication technologies.

The article states: “One example of a successful public-private partnership is currently playing out in Spain. AWS is working with the Spanish government to train unemployed workers in Aragon. Together with the technology cluster IDiA and AWS partner Global Knowledge, we are delivering certified cloud architecture and developer courses to unemployed individuals. Global Knowledge delivers the training virtually, in Spanish, and includes online testing. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates earn the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certificate, opening up opportunities to the growing cloud ecosystem in Spain.”

With regards to the Spanish recovery plan and the European Skills Agenda, the five-year plan to help individuals and businesses develop more and better skills by strengthening sustainable competitiveness, ensuring social fairness, and building resilience,  the cluster IDiA has already suggested to further develop the existing agreement and widen the skilling activities realised by this partnership.
