Mission to Japan: Eight Basque entities participated in a conference on offshore wind power in Kitakyushu

On 8 and 9 July, a conference on offshore wind power was held in Kitakyushu, organised by CDTI and NEDO, in collaboration with the Basque Energy Cluster. Eight Basque entities had the opportunity to present their main breakthroughs to representatives of the Japanese sector.

The mission was carried out in the context of technology cooperation that CDTI and NEDO maintain within the framework of the JSIP (Japan-Spain Innovation Programme for Technological Cooperation) bilateral programme. It represented the continuation of the reverse trade mission that a Japanese delegation carried out in July 2018, the main event of which took place in the Euskalduna Conference Centre in Bilbao.

On this occasion, on Monday 8 July, the main seminar was held at the Kitakyushu International Conference Center, with the participation of a hundred attendees from both countries. During the conference, projects from Japanese and Spanish entities were presented, related to the new designs and the different possibilities of both fixed bottom and floating offshore technologies. After the end of the technical conference, more than 60 B2B meetings were held between the Spanish and Japanese participants.

The visiting delegation was coordinated by the Basque Energy Cluster and the Spanish Wind Energy Association. On behalf of the Basque Country, the companies DITREL, ESTEYCO, HWS, NAVACEL, NAUTILUS, SAITEC OFFSHORE and VICINAY had the opportunity to attend and participate in the seminar, as well as the BASQUE ENERGY AGENCY, represented by its General Manager, Iñigo Ansola.

On Tuesday 9 July, a visit was organised to the floating wind power demonstration project in Hibiki-Nada, located 15 kilometres from the coast . The initiative is one of NEDO's main bets on this technological alternative. It consists of a barge-type platform on which a two-bladed turbine has been placed. With this project, NEDO pursues the development of appropriate technologies for the oceanic and meteorological conditions of the coastal areas of Japan for use in offshore wind power.
