The Technological Corporation of Andalusia (CTA) cluster network has joined AEI Tèxtils and ATEVAL in partnering with GALACTICA, an EU project aimed at digitalising the textile and aerospace sectors. The project will launch two open calls for innovative SMEs worth €3 million in 2021 and 2022.

Following on from the kick-off meeting, GALACTICA has officially launched. Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, GALACTICA aims to support the creation of new value chains in the textile and aerospace sectors by incorporating advanced digital technology in manufacturing. The project will provide financial support to 80 SMEs, as well as mentoring and coaching. GALACTICA has a total budget of €5 million. Of that, €4 million will directly support SMEs innovating with diverse mechanisms of which €3 million will be allocated towards financial support, through open calls for proposals, hackathons and travel grants. The first call for proposals is set to launch in March 2021 and the second in January 2022. Both calls will target SMEs working in aerospace, textile and advanced manufacturing industries. Prior to each call for proposals, the project will organise activities aimed at generating project ideas, such as workshops, matchmaking events and webinars. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the activities in the first round will be virtual. The textile and aerospace sectors combined employ more than two million people in Europe. Both sectors face similar challenges in incorporating advanced manufacturing technologies in their digitalisation and bringing industrial-intelligent systems into the production environment. Opportunities to combine the sectors using advanced manufacturing could enable new value chains to thrive, generate new market opportunities, boost revenue and improve productivity.
