In today´s morning session of the European Alliance Against Coronavirus, we spoke about the role of the life science ecosystem in the fight against COVID-19. As Dr. Horst Domdey from BioM (Munich Biotech Cluster) explained, the life science and pharma industry is in a good position to support with diagnostics and the development of vaccines.

These following key questions have been identified - let´s find answers:

  • How can you ensure the continuity of the current matchmaking activities, when all is done online?
  • What are the main challenges of the SMEs in this ecosystem? How can they use new opportunities?
  • Which can be joint approaches in Europe? How can European clusters, in coordination with the European Commission, support the life science sector to tackle the crisis?
  • How can we handle ongoing projects funded by the European Union?

Science Cluster

One main aspect of the Science Cluster is linked with the quality of the relations that exist between the multinationals - as drives of knowledge, innovation and investment  and the start-ups, which play an important role in the development of the agenda of this economic sector. I would like to have some comments from the 2 speakers in the morning about their experience and vision on this matter and how it will be possible, within this crisis, to reinforce these kind of partnerships.

About links between large companies and SMEs

Dear Jaime,
I'm not an specialist in the life science sector, so I can't speak specifically about it. But yes, I have a long, intensive and positive experience in promoting projects and initiatives combining both the interests of the large companies and those of the SMEs and start-ups. It's what we have being doing in the Custer IDiA for 16 years now, and in other multiple cross-cluster collaborative projects.
Multinationals have the strategic view, expertise, knowledge, resources and teams needed to drive most projects to their success. They can benefit greatly from others capacities provided by SMEs and Start-ups:  speed, entusiasm, full dedication, focus on their expertise, very high levels of creativity. The mix is perfect, and it's working very well in most, if not all, European clusters.
As always, the key are the persons: we need to create trusted links between companies, and to do that you need the right environment, network, occasions, rules. That's what cluster provide.
