Description of measure

Under the Japanese government's 'Strategic Road Map for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells' (2019), a series of measures is underway to support the development and promotion of hydrogen energy to achieve reduction targets for GHG emissions. Overall the strategy promotes the collaboration between stakeholders from the industry, government, and academia to accelerate hydrogen innovation. One of the measures underway is facilitates local and regional development. Untapped resources such as locally produced renewable energy, waste plastic, sewage sludge, and by-product hydrogen have the potential to be utilised as supply sources of low-carbon hydrogen. The cooperation between local governments and private companies enables the implementation of several projects that will use such untapped resources, aiming to create a cost-effective hydrogen supply chain (including necessary infrastrucuture and facilities) in different Japanese regions.
