Overview

About us

MecaTech is a Competitiveness Cluster in Mechanical engineering based in Wallonia, Belgium. Its mission is to create jobs and activity and contribute to the reindustrialization of the Region. This objective is achieved mostly through the development of large collaborative innovation projects  (more than 127 since 2006 generating 450M€ of investment) developed with a network of 300+ members. Members include SMEs, large companies, universities, research and training centres. MecaTech supports this ecosystem to develop innovative products, equipment and industrial processes with higher added value.

This network is active in 4 technologies:

  • Advanced Materials,
  • Advanced Manufacturing,
  • Mechatronics,
  • Data Technologies.

The sectors addressed are extremely varied: Energy & Environment, Medical Device, Defense & Security, Transport & Mobility, Manufacturing.

2 transversal priorities : Digitalisation and Circular Economy.

Since 2007, MecaTech has engineered 140+ projects (125 R&D projects, 10 investment projects and 8 training projects) involving 300+ members (50 large corporations, 160 SMEs, 80 university laboratories, 18 research centers, 5 higher schools and 3 competence centers; e.g., ). This represents an investment of €400+ million, of which €150+ million from private funding).

The companies involved in MecaTech have experienced an important growth as well in terms of employment as in added value. Employment developed from 2006 to 2019: + 75% for member companies, whereas the sector of mechanical engineering indicates a fall of 10%. The same applies to added value: + 83 for member companies vs + 20% for the sector.

MecaTech is also involved in the setting up of several Technology platforms on various topics such as Reverse metallurgy, Recycling of plastics (PEPIT), plasma Ion implantation process / coating technologies (Wallibeam), Anechoic chambers for IoT applications (WALLIWAVE), and Microfluidics (Coalition), Protontherapy (Protonwal, Ion Beam application for surface treatment.

Engineering Centre: PMT is founding member of A6K, an Advanced Engineering Centre & Tech Education Centre. A6K provides office space, labs & and shared production demonstrators. It hosts several industrial leaders (AGC, Thales, SONACA, Alstom…), start-ups and RTOs.

Project name

IoT4Industry (H2020, INNOSUP) - www.iot4industry.eu The IoT4Industry project seeks to support EU growth and competitiveness through the development of a new cross-sectoral industrial value chain based on the integration and use of IoT and related components (Digital Security, Cloud Computing and Big Data) into manufacturing tools, machines and robots, through the cross-border collaboration between SMEs and other RDI actors of the ICT and advanced manufacturing sectors. 40 industrial collaborative projects led by SMEs, and corresponding to different development stages (feasibility, prototyping, demonstration) have been selected through 2 call for proposals to receive funding and support (150+ application received). The objective is to further interconnect & develop new industrial value chain in European SMEs and improve their competitiveness on the global stage. In this project, MecaTech is responsible for activities related to the organization of call for Expression of Interests and Matchmaking activities. Our ecosystem in Wallonia was fully engaged, with 7 funded projects involving 15 companies.

Projet INTERREG V FACTORY 4.0 (France Wallonie Flandre), dedicated to increasing competitiveness of SME's of region in line with digital factory concepts. - Factory 4.0 is an INTERREG V (France-Wallonie-Flanders) project dedicated to foster the efficiency of production SMEs. The project enables SME’s to benefit from efficiency diagnostics based on the industry 4.0 concepts. The project is gathering 7 partners from 3 regions (Haut-de-France, Est-Flanders and Wallonia), and started in November 2016. 50+ SMEs supported individually.

Projet INTERREG V Robotix Academy (Greater Region). This INTERREG V Grande Region project, that started in October 2016, aims at building a network for research and education on the topics of industrial robotics and human machine interface. It gathers universities, RTO, and the industry.

Projet INTERREG IV INTERMAT GR (Grande Région), dedicated to materials & processes.
