About us
The Vision of the local Nelson Mandela Bay Maritime Cluster (NMBMC) is to be a pioneering maritime cluster model for Africa involving the participation of the ocean sciences, the ocean business community, government and its agencies, and civil society in responsible ocean governance by adopting the Quadruple Helix Innovation Model.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Maritime Cluster has initiated and arranged three maritime summits in South Africa, initiated and co-facilitated the first cluster-to-cluster matching event between South Africa and Europe (Nelson Mandela Bay Maritime Cluster and Maritime Cluster of West Sweden) during the 9th International Coastal & Marine Tourism Congress (CMT 2017) hosted and convened in Gothenburg, West Sweden. NMB Maritime Cluster facilitated the establishment of the Buffalo City Maritime Cluster and has plans to facilitate the construction of more maritime clusters in South Africa. The NMB Maritime Cluster has successfully developed a quadruple helix innovation model to encourage a stronger working relationship and more effective collaboration mechanism between government, academia, business and civil society.

The construction and establishment of maritime clusters is a new initiative for Africa. Support services include:
Capacity-building training programs and workshops, strategic intervention, lobbying and advocacy, matchmaking events, conference and symposium participation, support and implementation of national maritime programs and initiatives, information dissemination, knowledge and experience sharing, representation at local, regional and national events.

Both Sweden and Norway have indicated an interest in South Africa for ocean investment, ocean sciences, and maritime enterprise development. The Nelson Mandela Bay Maritime Cluster has attended promotional and information sharing events hosted and facilitated in South Africa by Norway and Sweden. In June 2017 the Nelson Mandela Bay Maritime Cluster particpated in a matchmaking event convened in Gothenburg by the Maritime Cluster of West Sweden.
