About us

The Norwegian Media Cluster is a world leader when it comes to augmented reality, graphics, visualization, AI, broadcast and television technology. The cluster has evolved into an exciting international environment with VizrtVimondMediability, the TV broadcasters TV2NRK, the newspapers Bergens Tidende and BAHighsoftSixty and The University of Bergen (Dept. of Information Science and Media Studies) as key players.

The cluster now comprises around 100 members and has cutting-edge competence in areas such as AR, VR, graphics and broadcast. Several of the cluster companies are world-leading enterprises in their markets. This is a highly successful environment. Fueled by a unique way of working together and combined with the best tools, more than 86 percent of the cluster members launch innovations every single year, including award winners and global game changers like Vizrt, Vimond and Sixty. The Norwegian Media Cluster enjoys an innovation ecosystem that works extremely well, with a high degree of joint innovation projects and high-speed innovation.

NCE Media The Media Cluster has its own cluster organization, NCE Media. This is the media cluster’s innovation driver, and was upgraded in 2015 to a Norwegian Center of Expertise under the program Norwegian Innovation Clusters.

MCB Media LabIn order to power innovation, the cluster has also developed a media lab, a sandbox for innovation and research, as well as a hub for joint projects between industry and R&D institutions. Housing digital platforms, a showroom and all the best tools for innovation and business development, the lab represents a vital tool for developing a strong industry and enhancing innovation, as well as being a fertile breeding ground for new ideas and future successes.  In an era where change and innovation are key for business, the Norwegian Media Cluster is a success story. As a member of the media cluster you’ll get access to all services and deliveries provided by NCE Media, and full access to Media City Bergen Media Lab.

Achievements

There is strong growth in the Norwegian media cluster and it can cite excellent results. A great number of exciting products are being created in the cluster. InRange, which saves lives, the game changer EaseLive from Sixty, and Electric Friends, which has a close cooperation with TV2 on automating TV production with robots, are just a few examples. Vimond outgrew Norway's borders a long time ago and has doubled its staff from 50 to 100 in just six months. The world leading Vizrt continues to impress and last year launched the prize-winning VizStory, a tool that really simplifies journalists’ publication work.

Highcharts in Vik is breaking new ground and has created online charts for the blind. Beat.no has developed Fabel’s new audio book service and is also behind Bangladesh’s most popular music app. TV2 Sport has delivered the most impressive Olympic Games to date – a feat carried out in cooperation with the cluster partners. In 2017, the University of Bergen launched three new bachelor's and three new master’s degree programs in the field of media technology and journalism, and cluster businesses, such as Vimond Media Solutions, have launched trainee programs. The game developer Dirtybit has had great success with FunRun, and was voted “Rising Star of the Year” in 2016. We have several great media houses that deliver important stories, and we have many players who create solutions that allow these stories to be told in new and exciting ways. There is significant innovation power in the cluster.

The main task of the cluster’s development prime driver NCE Media is to ensure the best possible conditions for this innovation power. This includes establishing arenas, laying the foundation for network building and partnerships, contributing to various innovation projects and raising collective competence across the cluster’s professional environments. This is achieved, among other things, through a wealth of annual seminars, workshops, breakfast meetings, “matchmaking”, “speed dating”, study trips and other similar arenas. The members also participate in a number of organized innovation arenas, workshops and innovation collaborations, which combined, give the companies a competitive advantage and growth opportunities. As a member of the media cluster, you will be able to take advantage of this.

As much as 86% of the cluster companies launched new innovations in 2016.

One of the highlights of 2017 was moving into Media City Bergen in Lars Hillesgate. Media City Bergen is not just a building for those with offices there, but also a competence and resource center for a broadly composed media cluster. Here, you can hold meetings, participate in a wealth of different events and, not least, use the state-of-the-art and forward-looking media lab for innovation projects alongside other members and environments in the cluster.

The media cluster creates tools that the media industry needs to be able to tell stories better, faster, in a more targeted manner, in the right context and in the right way. You are welcome to take part in this. NCE Media has members across Norway.
