Sober – inclusive – resilient – creative cities
Climate change has become our daily reality. From heat waves and droughts to storms and floods. While international mobilisation to reduce greenhouse gases is urgent, we must also prepare for the impacts of a deregulated climate. Urban areas, home to 55% of the world’s population and contributing 80% of global GDP, are the engine of global growth – but they are also the most vulnerable to these new impacts and chronic stresses. Cities must therefore anticipate these risks in order to guarantee both the access of populations to essential services and the economic, ecological and social functioning of their territory.
Following the example of the new economic models of transition, Brussels is transforming itself, thanks to the initiatives of public institutions, private stakeholders, associations, inhabitants, researchers, and other city users, into a dynamic ecosystem where inhabitants, start-ups, associations, artists, traders and producers live together and in which the values of use are circularity, innovation and mutualisation.
