IoT4Industry project: the iotization of the european SMEs

149 proposals received, 40 funded projects, 82 SMEs, 16 industrial sectors and 18 countries involved. These are some of the numbers of IoT4Industry, a European project that, since 2018, has provided €4 million to support European SMEs in the development of projects for the implementation and testing of IoT technologies in the production cycle.

The project was defined among the 20 best performing Innosup initiatives and awarded as the best “European Cluster Partnership of the Year” during the European Cluster Conference 2020.

Italy is among the most participating countries : among 40 funded projects, 15 included an italian partner and among them, 5  are MESAP members. MESAP has been the National Contact Point for the project as well as managing partner of the Innovation Vouchers and of the communication and dissemination activities.

Name & description

MESAP has a portfolio of 60 collaborative R&D projects about following items: mechatronics for automotive and railways, methods and tools for mechatronics, Production processes automation, eco-efficient products and production processes, nanostructured surface treatments, biomedical mechatronics applications.

These projects were funded by the FESR - POR (Regional Operative Programme) 2007 - 2013.

Other 26 RDI projects are starting in 2018, funded by the FESR - POR (Regional Operative Programme) 2014 - 2020.

Project name

MIND4MACHINES  (Innosup started in June 2021) as IoT4Industry, aiming to support cross-sectoral and cross-border collaborations between manufacturing SMEs, to test and adopt the latest digital technologies for transformation towards smarter, greener, and more resource-efficient manufacturing, aligned with the latest EU policies. The activity will provide dedicated funding and programs that accelerate market entry.  It has a broader partnership including members from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.

BOOST4BSOs Interreg Central Europe (April 2020- March 2022) Boosting CE Business Support Organizations (BSOs) capacities for I4.0 scale up support (https://www.interreg-central.eu/Content.Node/Boost4BSO.html) is a Interreg CE project aiming at improving knowledge build-up and sustainable knowledge transfer linkages among CE BSOs.To reach this goal, Boost4BSO capitalizes on training contents/methodologies developed by the core projects InnoPeer AVM and Things+ (both Interreg CE) and the upscaling practice experience of IoT4Industry (H2020), with complementary inputs from further EU/nat. I4.0 related initiatives. Project Partners will jointly develop a comprehensive competence development package for BSOs and support them in creating a toolkit to faciliate SMEs in industrial transformation.

FIT4FOF  project aimed at addressing workers’ needs in the smart factory, analysing technology trends across 6 industrial areas of robotics, additive manufacturing, mechatronics/machine automation, data analytics, cybersecurity and human machine interaction, to define new job profiles, which will inform education and training requirements. FIT4FoF will develop Alliances of Communities of Practice to broaden the approach across Europe, creating replication strategies enabling educational/training design and development practices across Europe.

The 5E project underpinned digitisation and support specifically the European electronics industry in seizing opportunities by federating – not merging – the 3 European electronics ecosystems, i.e. Nanoelectronics, Electronic Smart Systems, and Flexible, Organic & Printed Electronics. Federation will be achieved by developing a joint vision based on a thorough analysis of the state of play of the 3 ecosystems according to a standardised taxonomy, and focusing on the interfaces between the areas, as well as on opportunities for collaboration and cross-fertilisation.

DISCp (DIA)  built-up a partnership of world leading clusters to configure a “European Strategic Cluster Partnership – Going International” focused on internationalization of digital technologies applied to manufacturing and industry 4.0. It aimed at increasing their competitiveness and fostering the international cooperation among SMEs, according to the European strategy.

Project EXPRESS FP7 - Mobilising Expert Resources in the European Smart Systems Integration Ecosystem.

Diffuse the knowledge and the adoption of Smart System to reach the European leadership in this field. MESAP is mainly involved in WP2 - From Education to Markets – Elevating the Smart Systems Industrial Ecosystem in Europe.
