About us

LGCA aims at actively involving all regional players potentially involved in the bioeconomy. It aims at creating, in close cooperation with the regional authorities, the most favourable environment for the development of the bioeconomy in Lombardy. It represents a meeting point for all actors (research, companies all along the different value chains, stakeholders), a major reference for the regional authorities and an access point to international players.

Intending to trigger interregional cooperation on the bio-based industry sector, LGCA is the technical coordinator of the Bioeconomy Pilot of the Vanguard initiative (www.s3vanguardinitiative.eu). Focused on promoting a new growth through Smart specialisation, the Vanguard Initiative is a network of 35 European regions, driven by a political commitment whose goal consists in using Smart Specialisation Strategy to boost new growth through bottom-up entrepreneurial innovation and industrial renewal in European priority areas. The Bioeconomy Pilot aims at setting up trans-regional value chains in the area of the innovative and sustainable use of renewable resources. Thanks to a continuous mapping of funded projects on bioeconomy sector and interregional cooperation actions, 25 regions have expressed interest and are involved in the Bioeconomy Pilot. The long-term goals of the Pilot are focused on encouraging projects at the demonstration and piloting stage towards their upgrading and business exploitation (beyond TRL 5) and support the establishment of investment pipelines based on industry-driven business cases coherent with the smart specialisation strategies of the participating regions.

Achievements

The Cluster is co-chair of the Bioeconomy Pilot within the Vanguard Initiative. In addition, it leads the "Biogas beyond energy" table within the same initiative, where 12 European regions are identifying cooperation projects to overcome the current business model, dependent on public support, for the development of a self-sustainable biogas industry as a model of "diffused biorefinery".
