Europe’s industrial clusters mobilise to fight COVID-19

How are European industrial clusters active in the fight against COVID-19?

Euronews explores this topic in a recent article, accompanied by a video showing how clusters are involved in innovation to fight the COVID-19 crisis. The objective is to innovate, bring new products quickly onto the market, shake up production processes in record time, and to share information.

Here is the ‘battle plan’ of the European clusters:

  • Industrial clusters are key actors in the industrial ecosystem, fostering interactions between large companies, SMEs, universities and other research centres and public authorities.
  • In the COVID-19 crisis, clusters’ work is essential for spotting market shortages and facilitating much-needed interactions between producers, suppliers and delivery companies to increase production of medical supplies.
  • The European Commission launched an informal call to the European industrial clusters (with support from the European Clusters Alliance) to map available production capacity for masks, PPE and ventilators. In record time, it received over 1,100 offers from companies with options for producing these medical supplies.
  • The ECCP has created a COVID-19 Industrial Clusters Response Portal with key information from industry, as well as a forum to share experiences and ask for or offer help.
