EU Clusters Talks: Patents in Europe: A new framework for innovation
31 May 2023 - 31 May 2023
Intellectual property (IP) is a key driver for economic growth as it helps companies gain value from their intangible assets like brands, designs, patents, and data. Intangible assets are increasingly important in today's knowledge economy. IP-intensive industries account for almost half of all GDP and over 90% of all EU exports. Therefore, the European Commission has proposed new rules to help companies make the most of their inventions, leverage new technologies and contribute to the EU's competitiveness and technological sovereignty. The proposed regulations should create a more transparent, effective and futureproof intellectual property rights framework and covers standard essential patents (SEPs), compulsory licensing, and Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs).
In this context, the European Cluster Collaboration Platform, on behalf of the European Commission, DG GROW, organised the EU Clusters Talk “Patents in Europe: A new framework for innovation” on 31 May 2023, 8:30 – 9:45 CET, to inform about the new proposed regulatory framework and discuss how companies, especially SMEs, can benefit from new patent rules.
Claudia Martinez Felix, Deputy Head of Unit, DG GROW, European Commission;
Markus Kicia, Legal Officer, DG GROW, European Commission;

This event is part of bi-weekly online meetings brought to the cluster community by the European Cluster Collaboration Platform. They offer up-to-date insights into the latest industrial policies and clusters’ involvement, projects, and best practices, the latest ECCP news, and funding opportunities. The EU Clusters Talks are a space to exchange knowledge and to discuss cluster-relevant topics, which will change with every meeting.
