About us

The Emilia-Romagna’s Greentech Clust-ER aims at connecting companies, universities, research and education centers, and regional stakeholders along with the Emilia-Romagna’s S3 Strategy. The Greentech Clust-ER aims at

  • achieving a greater integration between stakeholders (mainly, research centres and industries) of the regional innovation system;
  • maximising the opportunities for participating in European programmes and international research and innovation networks;
  • encouraging and support the development and creation of initiatives in higher education and the development of human resources;
  • supporting and encouraging the development of new research infrastructure in the general interest of the Emilia-Romagna region.

The Greentech Clust-ER operates through 2 working groups representing the following value chains that are most important to the regional economy in terms of turnover, employment and competitive positioning in the international context:

  • Low Carbon Economy in Emilia-Romagna;
  • Environmental Sustainability and Ecosystem Services.

The strategic objectives of the Clust-ER “Energy and Sustainable Development” are:

  • support the development of renewable energy sources (electrical, thermal and biofuels) at regional level and their integration with existing networks, valorizing the regional industrial excellences.
  • promote the climate change mitigation through the reduction of CO2 emissions thanks to the development of “low carbon technologies”, the improvement of energy efficiency and the realization of a general  “decarbonization action” of all economic sectors;
  • support the climate change mitigation and adaptation through better prevention and management of risk factors, relying on existing regional know-how in terms of monitoring and numerical modelling of the environment;
  • foster the product and process innovation in the perspective of “circular economy”, pursuing the decoupling between economic growth and consumption of finished resources (raw materials, water, etc.), starting from the design phase of products till to the to the treatment and management of by-products and waste and residues;
  • support the development and adoption of technologies for reducing ecological impacts on ecosystems and health, with reference to environmental monitoring and remediation techniques;
  • promote the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, all the productive and economic activities of the territory directly or indirectly depend on.

Hydrogen (H2) and the Power-To-Gas (P2G) Greentech Working Groups (WG) prepared two position papers to express the interest and the commitment of their members to build in Emilia-Romagna (ER) Region strategic demonstration plants. More in details, H2 WG proposal is to build a regional hub for the development of technologies capable of leveraging the birth of a H2 supply chain consisting of five components: 1) H2 station for cars, buses and trucks; 2) Renting of H2 cars; 3) Training center on H2 technology; 4) H2 Exhibition and demonstration center for the residential sector - public and private - and mobility; 5) Test center on fuel cells and green hydrogen production.

P2G WG position paper is aimed at setting up a demo plant where optimizing the technology from a technological and economic point of view, in order to scale it to the market. P2G is a seasonal storage technology that transforms electric energy produced from renewable energy in compressed gas (H2 or through a methanation process also CH4) that could then be transported use the existing natural gas infrastructure. The two position papers have been already presented to the Regional Policy Maker and it under discussion the setting up of a PPP-Public Private Partnership to realize and finance the realization of these demo-plants.
