Example of cross-sectorial project: WATER & TOURISM. Bussines Development, R&D and internasionalisation
The economic sector that has risen up the most during the last decades is tourism and it is bearing up to the crisis the best. It should be noted that water consumption and treatment in this sector is significant since the usual facilities offered (swimming pools, spa, golf courses, among others) have high water consumption rates.
Specifically, focusing in the Catalonia and Mediterranen region, where tourism sector is one of the most important ones, this is characterized by a high water stress during dry weather conditions that coincide with the periods with the highest tourism occupational rates. Consequently, sustainability, water reuse and water saving are becoming essential topics to this sector in order to be able to guarantee to the tourists the availability of all the high water consumption facilities all over the year.
Consequently, this sector was identified as a relevant one for the CWP and its members. For this reason, the CWP initiate a collaboration with the University of Girona to perform a project to evaluate the “water consumption and water resource saving measures available in the tourism sector in Catalonia” 2013, in order to provide to the CWP members valuable information to become involved in this sector, which was unknown for almost all of them,
The results of this evaluation highlighted the long way still available to reach the good practises of an efficient water cycle management and presented four main challenges for the sector: (i) introduce cost-saving strategies on the water cycle management, (ii) implementation of innovative technologies for water treatment, (iii) application of control, monitoring tools in order to improve the water quality, and finally (iv) implementation of innovative systems for facilities (golf course, swimming pools, etc.) with the highest water consumption.
Consequently, this project allowed to the CWPs members to acquire a valuable knowledge about a new sector and identify possibilities to optimize the water cycle management in tourism facilities. This knowledge was transformed in several activities promoted by the CWP. Specifically, thanks to this initiative nowadays there are three main working lines being developed within the collaboration of the tourism sector and the CWP members:
- Promotion and participation in R&D projects: An European project is being developed by three members of the CWP to demonstrate integrated innovative technologies for an optimal and safe closed water cycle in Mediterranean tourist facilities (budget of 5.9 M€). 2013-2017
- Generation of business development opportunities for the CWP’s members by organizing collective diagnosis of the water cycle management of specific tourism facilities. The CWP organizes diagnosis with tourism facilities interested in optimizing their water cycle management. This diagnosis generate business opportunities and provides more information about the sector for the CWP members.
- Organization of workshop and seminar sessions with tourism sector actors (2013-2020)
- H2020 Hydrousa project (2018-2022) with CWP as a member of the consortium, this larger Innovation Action with 6 demo-sites in Greece is focused in circular economy in Mediterranean are, one of the demo-site it's a Eco-hostel. CWP it's a member of the consortium with two members of the CWP.
-
The CWP coordinates a RIS3 2017-2020 project of 1.6M€ with seven CWP members with regionalized ERDF funds (European Regional Development Fund) about sustainability in hospitality sector.
- COSME GO INTERNATIONAL (1rs strand SENTINEL 2019 and 2nd strand Welliance 2020) to promote internasionalisation in the hospitality sector in Mexico, USA and South Africa
- INTERREG SUDOE (2020-2022) to promote water reuse and efficiency in hospitality sector with the CWP`and two members of the CWP as members in the consortium
For all these reasons, we consider that with this initial project and working group in the CWP was able to help its members to be involved in a new sector (new for them) and generate a valuable knowledge that is being used for promoting several activities to continue working on it in areas as R&D, internasionalisation or Business Development. We are a coordinator of important project for our members and we participate in R&D big consortiums related with tourism and water.
