SAMBAH 1

The SAMBAH project was implemented between 2009 – 2016 by all Baltic States, with the exception of the Russian Federation. It was aimed at assessing the numbers and seasonal distribution of the extremely endangered population of the Baltic Sea Harbour Porpoise. The data was collected and initially processed between 2011 – 2014. The Polish partners in the project included the University of Gdańsk with the Professor Krzysztof Skóra Hel Marine Station as the national project coordinator, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – Maritime Branch in Gdynia, and the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection. National funding was provided by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Gdańsk and partner resources.

The SAMBAH project is the first such large project in the world to employ the hydroacoustic method in the study of small cetaceans. The data obtained will be used in devising and implementing effective and rational methods of protecting the Baltic porpoise population.
