21 promising deeptech startups and scaleups were selected for the second batch of the MME program – let’s take a look at the numbers behind our second open call winners!

The second MME open call for startups and scaleups closed on the 30th of October, with 84 applications. 21 top deeptech innovators have been selected for the second support cycle. Who are they? Which challenges are they addressing? Let’s jump into it and share some relevant statistics with you!

Where are our startups based?

The 21 selected startups are based in 14 different countries, from both EU and H2020 associated countries. This shows the wide reach of MediaMotorEurope and allows for better diversity. The countries with more representation are Belgium, Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom. In the infographic above, the map shows the widespread of the selected companies, across Europe and beyond.

Which media challenges are the selected startups targeting?

The open call winners present solutions to some of the biggest challenges of the media industry.

Facilitating the transition to a data-driven media industry 4.0” is the most common challenge, being addressed by almost half (48%) of the selected companies. The categories “Advancing human-machine interaction”,  “Improved accessibility to media outlets” and “Better protection of personal data and data in general” are tied in second place, each represented by 14% of the startups. It is also interesting to note that the challenge “Fight against misinformation and fake news”, which had been heavily represented by the startups of the first support cycle, showed a decrease in the second support cycle.

What’s to come?

The top startups and scaleups have been assigned to one of MME’s four hubs:

  • the Brussels hub – VRT, Belgium
  • the Bergen hub – Media City Bergen, Norway
  • the Sofia hub – Cluster Sofia Knowledge City, Bulgaria
  • the Thessaloniki hub – THERMI – Business Incubator

Each startup has been assigned a dedicated coach chosen by their hub, that will help guide their path within the program. Nevertheless, every startup will benefit from the complete range of opportunities within the MME ecosystem.

The startups and scaleups will be embarking on the MediaMotorEurope journey starting in January 2021, and will benefit from several services: dedicated coaching to support upscaling the business and soft-landing to new markets, tailored support and guidance to their needs and challenges, matchmaking with media and creative corporations and public procurement support, meetings and networking opportunities with investors, pitching and showcasing at major media events, the chance to win tickets to relevant international conferences of high impact, and vouchers of up to EUR 600 to support travel costs to events (if possible to travel).
