Over 23 years, the FEMAC cluster has been able to adapt to the changes demanded by a sector, the agricultural production means, more digitized and specialized to a growing demand for agricultural products.
FEMAC located in Catalonia (Spain), is the Catalan Cluster of Agricultural Production Means. FEMAC was set up to enable the cooperation of its members in and around innovation projects for a sustainable griculture. Our members come from all parts of the innovation value chain of the agricultural means sector, and our philosophy is to pool all the expertise that is needed for technology and service developers to bring their product and research results successfully to the market.
It was established first as the Cluster of Agricultural Machinery in 1997. After more than one decade, FEMAC decided to integrate a Smart Specialization Strategy in the Cluster to better respond to complex Agricultural development challenges through: (1) rejuvenating the agricultural production means sector, (2) through higher value-added activities and new market niches, and (3) modernizing by adopting and disseminating new technologies (KETs) like photonics, electronics and GIS & GPS.
In 2016 FEMAC joined the Smart Strategy in Catalonia, together with the University of Lleida, and different stakeholders related to the agro food sector. Together they created the Community of Food Production Technologies (COTPA), with the objectives to Innovation in the field of food production technologies, to get an effective incorporation of advanced technologies in food production processes, and the sustainability in a context of activity compatible with balanced rural development. FEMAC as a coordinator of COTPA, leads the Project LISA (Low Inputs & Sustainable Agriculture), and it is member of IoE-Crops, a Project to deploy the use of internet of things in the agriculture and farming processes. In 2017, FEMAC started an initiative to create DIGITAL FARMING HUB, in collaboration with the Catalan Agricultural Research Centre (IRTA) and the Catalan Technological Centre (EURECAT).
