  • Coexphal is an important institution in the F&V sector of Almeria. Formed in 1977 to organize the export activities of farmers upon the opening up of EU markets, it has morphed into a central leader in commercial and research activities, as well as developing a broad portfolio of business, legal and training services for its 80 plus producer organization members. It represents 70% in Almeria exports and 65% in fruit and vegetable production as well as 67% in ornamental production of the region.

  • Coexphal has led the major changes that have occurred in the F&V sector in Almería, serving as an example of innovation management: improvements in marketing channels, search for new market opportunities, implementation of biological control, efficient resource use techniques, management education etc. It has promoted a continuous and sustainable development of the agricultural sector in the province, relying on seeking competitive advantage by improving quality of the products and social conditions and reducing environmental impacts.

  • The approximattely 50 employees of Coexphal come from departments providing a wide range of services and consulting to its members including: lifelong training for farmers, workers and field advisors (more than 100 training courses /year), marketing and external promotion, research and statistics, communications and press, insurance, human resources and immigration, risk prevention, a travel agency, and quality control, etc. In addition it has a laboratory dedicated to agricultural innovation, biological control and clinical analysis.

  • Coexphal is a Center of Research and Technology (C.I.T.) recognised by the Spanish authority and Office for the Transfer of Research Results (O.T.R.I.). The technical department is also coordinating the advisory services of COEXPHAL´s member cooperatives with more than 400 technicians providing support to the farmers.

  • Coexphal participates in, and promotes the participation of its associated members in, European, national and regional projects and initiatives.

  • Coexphal group is composed of several companies of the auxiliary industry to the horticultural sector whose purpose is the improvement of the competition of the important horticultural companies. These investee companies offer biological control services, engineering, crop certification, quality verification of fruit and vegetables received in the market, training.

  • Coexphal leads the sector Cluster, comprised of:  Coexphal and its related companies, Cajamar Cooperative Bank Foundation and Experimental Farm, and HISPATEC, a technology provider specialised in SME agri- solutions. Within Coexphal structure different positions are lead by PhD with different profiles and specializations (Agricultural Economics, Food Chemistry and Organisational Management).Some of them are linked to EU  groups and organisations (e.g.: SCAR SWG AKIS, EUVRIN, ARELFL, ERIAFF,...) .

      • Coexphal has an internal R+D team which meets with Coexphal´s associated members  to determine their research and innovation needs, i.e. farmer driven research agenda. At the same time, Coexphal try to find public funds for the support and promotion of R + D in the companies that establish it.

      • Coexphal funds a Chair of Horticulture, Cooperative Studies and Sustainable Development at the University of Almería, Spain, which acts as a bridge between academic research and the sector, allowing processes of co-creation and fluid exchange of knowledge and faster uptake of innovative technologies. As well, Cajamar funds the Chair of BioEconomy at the University of Almería.

      • Internet OF Food and Farm: IOF2020: Call H2020-IOT-2016.

      The IoF2020 project is dedicated to accelerate adoption of IoT for securing sufficient, safe and healthy food and to strengthen competitiveness of farming and food chains in Europe. It will consolidate Europe’s leading position in the global IoT industry by fostering a symbiotic ecosystem of farmers, food industry, technology providers and research institutes.

      • NEFERTITI (Networking European Farms to Enhance Cross Fertilisation & Innovation Uptake through Demonstration). Call: RUR-12-2017, H2020. 

      NEFERTITI (Networking European Farms to Enhance Cross Fertilisation & Innovation Uptake through Demonstration) is a Network of 32 partners coordinated by ACTA. It establishes 10 interactive thematic networks and 45 regional clusters (hubs) of demo-farmers and actors (advisors, NGOs, industry, education, researchers and policy makers) in 17 countries. It focuses on creating added value from knowledge exchange between networks in order to boost innovation uptake and to improve peer to peer learning and network connectivity across Europe.
