Cluster Strategy
Mission/Objectives: 

The Biotechnological and Biomedical Clúster of the Balearic Islands, BIOIB, was born in 2010 as an initiative of the Government of the Balearic Islands and of the Balearic Association of Companies of Biotechnology, constituted by companies in which the technological innovation plays a fundamental role inside his competitive strategy. BIOIB's principal aim is to increase and to reinforce the competitiveness of the economy of the islands in a long term, promoting sectors that contribute to the economic development of the region. 

The creation of the clúster BIOIB is the result of the conjunction of all the actors of the triple helix, where there are included the Administration, public and private Hospitals, the University of the Balearic Islands and other generating institutions of knowledge and interface, besides the biotechnological and biomedical  production sutructure/fabric . This structure assures the dynamics of functioning of the clúster and allows his development and his long-term consolidation. This way, the improvements in competitiveness resultant of the synergies (as result of the strengthening of the cooperation, the increase of the transfer of knowledge and the participation in national and international networks) will revert in a growth of the activity.

In 2014, BIOIB was awarded with the “Bronze Label in Cluster Management Excellence”  which is a recognition, at the euroepan level, of the quality of the cluster management and a clear course to move towards excellence.

    Details of support services: 
    1. JUNIOR LAB: BIOIB is aware of the importance of disseminating science and its applicability to students, that´s why we perform actions such as delivery of lectures on the sector in schools; facilitating access for students to do internships in companies as well as offering the possibility of practical experience in a laboratory.
    2. SUPPORT IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT: The cluster provides support to the actors in the biotechnology and biomedical sector in management of their organizations in order to promote research and management excellence.
    3. ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROMOTION:The Cluster considers very important to support entrepreneurs, and for this reason we assist them in the identification of new business ideas as well as the development of the business model; organizing workshops related to entrepreneurship and providing support in fundraising.
    4. ACCESS TO NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS:BIOIB involves different national and international networks such as ASEBIO, TRANSBIO, ITEMAS; companies and partners have access to participate in events organized by them, such as matchmaking events, conferences, training, etc; as well as the opportunity to spread their activities and identify potential partners.
    5. TRAINNING:The cluster periodically performs an identification of the training needs of its members and Expertise; They organize courses, training seminars and provides access to the cluster, members can make dissemination of knowledge through courses; seminars, workshops and conferences.
    6. EVENTS AND CONFERENCES: Organization of Conferences, seminars and workshops, participation in fairs and national and international congresses to publicize the status and activity of the biotechnology and biomedicine sector of the Balearic Islands to economic, social and institutional agents.
    7. PROJECTS:BIOIB offers to his members support in the preparation of collaborative projects and/or individual ones; through the identification of national and international tasks calls; dissemination of them as well as support the preparation and presentation of projects.

    1. TRANSBIO SUDOE: Sponsored by the INTERREG IV B SUDOE program  is a transnational cooperation project dedicated to innovation in life sciences in South-West of Europe. TRANSBIO SUDOE involves research laboratories, companies, technological platforms, competitiveness clusters and technological transfer offices (TTOs) from 8 Southern European regions in the field of biotechnologies and health: Midi-Pyrénées, Aquitaine, Languedoc-Roussillon, Lisbon, Barcelona, Valencia, Balearic Islands and Galicia. The TRANSBIO SUDOE project was built on the scientific, technological and educational potential of the area, and is the continuation of INTERBIO, a successful project financed by the INTERREG SUDOE program during the 2009-2012 period.

    Regional:

    • Balears Bioempren:  The project consists of offering the participants: - a system of training based on the accompaniment of the entrepreneur by means of mentoring. - formative material specially elaborated for the biotechnological sector. - you visit to groups of investigation and organization of chats, Másters, Degrees... - personalized tutorships. 
    • From Regional to World-Class Cluster is a project financed with regional funds (grants to encourage and promote the transfer of knowledge and / or innovation in the productive sector and business) and it's main objective is to improve the innovative ecosystem of biotechnological and biomedical sector in the Balearic Islands; and therefore it has been proposed as a project to move forward the implementation of the BIOIBs Strategic Plan defined for the period 2014-2016. the objective of the aid is to strength and consolidate  the coordination and management structure of the clusters that are already constituted.
    • Accions Especials CAIB 2015: "Improving technical  and knowledge skills of the human resources of the cluster" and "Internationalization of it's members". Both projects are granted with regional funds and are aimed at strengthening the cluster members through two key points such as Internationalization and Human resources.

    Success Story / Achievements: 
    • Balerars Bioemprén is a program of training and advice that BIOIB performs since  2011, jointly with the Government of the Balearic Islands,  with the aim to stimulate, encouraging and helping to the creation of innovative companies of technological base in the field of the biotechnology. The results up to today are really positive and the program is going to continue working.

    Why should partners choose you for cooperation?: 

    The critical mass in the biotech sector in the Balearic Islands is small but the results and outcomes of the actions done by our companies are really positive.

    Due to our location, at the Technological Park of the Balearic Islands, and the proximity with the actors of the triple helix,  we facilitate the relationships between the University and research centers (as knowledge generators), the companies (as economic drivers) and the governement (as policy makers). Also, our clusters covers multiple subsectos under the Biotech and biomedical sector, including: marine biotechnology, health sciences, agri-food and environmental engineering, bioinformatics and industrial biotechnology.

    We have prior experience in transnational cooperation both on european projects (Transbio SUDOE)  and on organizing international events.

    We are looking forward to be part of this plattform because is an opportunity to exchange good practices and meet potential partners. But the main reason is to explore synergies with other clusters/partners for future collaborations in cross-sectoral projects in the field of agri-food or other biotech subsectors.
