Smart specialisation – Joensuu region invests in selected productive sectors. One of the goals is to increase enterprises’ international competitiveness and know-how in the region.
Fossil oil free region – Emerging bioeconomy and climate change consideration provide good opportunities for resource efficient activities in Joensuu region. The objective to become a region that is free from fossil oil is demanding but realistic.
The programme includes the chosen operational and production priorities of development, development foci of the operating environment as well as special themes to be considered.
The region’s production priorities are Photonics, creative industries, forestry and bioenergy, as well as technology industry, plastics and metal industry, materials technology and ICT.
These fields will be developed by strengthening the competitiveness of business life, different skills, internationalisation and resource efficiency. The objective is especially to utilise the geographical location in proximity to Russia. Furthermore, special focus will be on the youth, local development of rural areas and promotion of the region’s attractiveness and image.
In regard to the development of operating environment, the focus is on the functionality of transport and communications systems and on high-quality of education and research. The region will invest in effective service system, availability of services and in service entrepreneurship. Environmental issues become emphasised especially as the region invests in low-carbon economy and also in the quality of housing and living environment.
